Examines developments which caused Mexico and the US to de-emphasize their disagreements and to focus instead on their converging interests, viz. the Mexican debt crisis of 1982 and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Notes that NAFTA further blurred the line between US foreign and domestic policy with regard to Mexico, and vice versa, and this development holds implications for future bilateral relationship that are both positive and negative.
