Argues that the Single European Market (SEM) is integral to global restructuring and is designed to rationalize the ongoing development of science, technology, the economy and the market in order to raise productivity and enhance productivity. Asserts that the Caribbean must develop its productive forces in order to transcend the limitations that are imposed by monocrop specializations and dependence on preferences which have traditionally sustained a given level of economic activity and foreign exchange without achieving competitiveness or contributing to technological innovation. Examines the implications of the changes in the SEM and the Caribbean for the working classes relative to their ability to reproduce the conditions of their existence.
