North-American Free Trade Agreement and foreign direct investment.

GESTRIN, Michael

North-American Free Trade Agreement and foreign direct investment. - 1994

Describes NAFTA's new investment rules, and examines the Agreement's discriminatory measures and their potential impact upon intra- and inter-regional investment patterns for particular industries. Observes that the numerous positive precedents set by the NAFTA in the area of international investment will invariably influence the negotiation of future regional trade and investment agreements, and will probable serve as benchmarks for future investment-related negotiations in the World Trade Organization. However, it also sets a dangerous example for future regional trade agreements in its limited, but obvious, use of rules of origin to support particular industries.
