Dispute settlement in the World Trade Organization : characteristics and structural implications for the European Union - 1998

Addresses the question to what extent the revised dispute settelment system, as enacted by the Marrakesh Agreement, and in force since 1 January 1995, requires the European Communities (as well as other members of the WTO) to change perceptions and attitudes to world trade law. Explores some of the structural implications of the WTO dispute settlement for the European Communities. Looks into possible effects on the management of disputes and the relationship of Member States, industry and the EC. Addresses the problem of compliance and the implications of the dispute settlement system for the judiciary in the Union and the Member States. Evokes the theme of dispute prevention in external economic relations.
