Free international trade and protection of the environment : irreconcilable conflict?

Schoenbaum, Thomas J.

Free international trade and protection of the environment : irreconcilable conflict? - 1992

Identifies four categories of trade restrictions in the name of environmental quality, viz. regulations on imports and exports adopted by nations to safeguard domestic resources and environment and to protect public health and safety; provisions in international agreements; unilateral trade restrictions; and, controls on the export of hazardous products, technologies and waste. Examines the four types of restrictions in the light of current international trade law, and offers suggestions for resolving the tension between international free trade and environmental quality.
