Compensation for use of biological resources under the Convention on Biological Diversity : compatibility of conservation measures and competitiveness of the biotechnology industry.

GOLDMAN, Karen Anne

Compensation for use of biological resources under the Convention on Biological Diversity : compatibility of conservation measures and competitiveness of the biotechnology industry. - 1994

Presents the extensive global loss of biodiversity that is currently occuring, and the aesthetic, environmental and economic reasons for minimizing further loss. Examines the growing recognition of the economic value of biodiversity. Sets out provisions for both monetary compensation and transfer of technology, and explains the previously voiced US concerns about these provisions. Examines currently operating agreements providing for compensation for the use of biological resources in anticipation of their commercial development. Concludes that royalties from products based on biological resources are appropriate, but technology transfer arrangements that abrogate intellectual property rights are not.
