Women's formal education: achievements and obstacles.

ALMERAS, Diane

Women's formal education: achievements and obstacles. - 1994

Considers the factors which work to exclude women from greater access to education whle at the same time pose formidable challenges to the educational system, viz. the isolation of rural areas; the generation gap that exist in terms of educational levels; ethnic discrimination; and, the persistence of illiteracy. Notes that despite these problems, women's educational status has improved significantly in recent decades, due to an overall improvement in their educational level and an increase in female enrolment in relation to male enrolment. Discusses how sexual stereotypes, teachers' attitudes and gender segregation in the labour market may help to distort girls' individual opportunities and encourage them to internalize their subordinate position in society.
