Targets students and researchers in health psychology disciplines, and in the health professions. Stresses the need for men's health to be examined in a social context, and therefore looks at how socially constructed concepts of the masculine gender affect men in relation to their health. Examines aspects of men's health including: lower life expectancy of men than women in most cultures; men's reluctance to utilize health care services and to seek help for emotional problems etc. Looks at the effect, on men, of pressure to conform to social stereotypes of masculinity in areas including: their choice of occupations; their recreational activities; and, their tendency to engage in risky activities, including violent crime. Examines men's relationship to their bodies, work, family and ageing.
