Summary: Praises West Indian Scholars who created a body of West Indian historical studies for creating a sense of West Indian identity. Discusses four themes which give continuity and coherence to West Indian history viz. a struggle for freedom as exemplified by the Maroons and Bush Negroes; a struggle for security and justice as evidenced by the work of William Gordon and Paul Bogle; a struggle for the control of one's own affairs clearly seen in the wprk of Marcus Garvey, Grantley Adams and Eric Williams; and the creation of an indigenous West Indian culture.
