Summary: Looks at the central role women played as performers in the formative years of the calypso i.e. in the early part of the 19th century and records their near disapperarnce from the genre by the end of that century. Discusses how the content of the calypso has 'mirrored' gender relations in the society and examines the motivations underlying the decision of current women calypsonians to enter an occupation that had become so male-identified and their experience in the calypso industry.
