NAFTA's threat to Central American and Caribbean Basin exports : a revealed comparative advantage approach.

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: 1994Action note:
  • 3/7/00 M2LMGR
Summary: Argues that Caribbean Basin exports to the US market face potential displacement under NAFTA in those cases where (a) Mexican exports are very competitive with those from the Caribbean Basin; (b) the new levels of preferential access granted to Mexican exports under NAFTA would be decisive; and (c) where Mexico's exports possibly have a significant advantage over those from the Caribbean Basin. Contends that the NAFTA will have only minimal displacement effects on basin exports to the US in those cases in which the Basin's exports, at present, enjoy a sizeable competitive advantage over Mexico.
