Notes that although it originated as a US government research project, very little of the current INTERNET is owned, operated, or even controlled by government bodies. Examines the long-term role for government in the continued evolution of the Internet. Concludes that as the Internet continues on its commercial and international path, the role of government will continue to be essential, and may expand to include more involvement by governments around the world.
