Summary: Examines the rationale and expected gains from the formation of regional economic blocs. Notes that while the potential benefits of an enlarged regional economic bloc is generally appealing to developing countries, the experiences and case of Sub-Saharan African countries suggest that they begin with an arrangement of economic cooperation which focuses on trade in food. Ultimately, this could lead to production of new and possibly non-traditional agricultural commodities because of the creation of an enlarged market.
