Spells out some key definitions, describes the WTO provisions permitting regional arrangements and recounts the main historical events which led to the current wave of regionalism. Reviews the economic effects of Preferential Trade Areas (PTAs) on union members and the global trading system. Examines two terms viz. 'open regionalism' and 'deep integration'. Provides suggestions for reforming the WTO rules on PTAs.
