Examines the essential role of crisis in the process of organizational renewal. Uses stories of various enterprises to develop the conceptual models. Chooses examples including: the Bushmen hunters who became herders; the Quakers; Compaq Computer Corporation; and Nike. Looks at their evolution, examining their birth, growth to maturity, aging, and need for renewal. Proposes the return to learning as the formula for renewal, and distinguishes between a performance organization and a learning organization. Also distinguishes between reengineering and renewal.
