Summary: Reviews what is known about the HIV epidemic in different countries and sub-regions. Looks at information about risk behaviours, both in the general population and in particular groups whose behaviour may expose them or their partners to high risk infection. Identifies gaps in our knowledge and information systems and makes suggestions for improving data collection and analysis. Discusses some of the major challenges facing the countries of the Region as they confront AIDS.
