Summary: Emphasises the need for LAN management to be able to spot problems before they happen, instead of merely reporting when they do, i.e. they must be proactive. Presents a sampling of network monitors, or probes, which can track a range of network activity over time, giving network managers a way to create a profile of normal LAN traffic and spot changes that could adversely affect performance.
