Identifies NAFTA pros and cons for CARICOM as follows: pros - incentive for economic restructuring to develop global competitiveness; access to Mexico's large consumer market for goods and services; access to Mexican investment for the Caribbean; greater opportunities for investment in the Mexican economy; incentive to quicken the process of regional economic integration and regional free trade. Aspects of concern to CARICOM are: competition from more price-competitive Mexican products; threats to CBI benefits; competition for foreign investment; competition from Mexico's cheap labour; threat of economic marginalisation resulting from unequal free trade competition from Mexico and South America.
