Briefly reviews the main theoretical and practical issues of poverty measurement in an economy like Guyana. Analyses the economic data which support an interpretation of a worsened poverty situation which has not been retrieved by the recorded growth of 6.0 percent and 6.5 percent of real GDP in 1991 and 1992. Notes that remedial action to date has been far from adequate.
