Focuses on the employment impact of privatization over the period 1990 to 1998. Provides a brief review of state ownership as a platform of economic transformation, as it was then envisaged by policy-makers. Analyzes the privatization programme against the changed economic conditions in which the Government found itself towards the end of the 1980s. Examines the impact of the restructuring process and/or privatization, reviews the perspectives of key stakeholders in the political economy of the country, and presents some conclusions on the likely evolution of current policies.
