  <abstract>Presents an overview of international agreements concerning the rights of disabled persons to equal opportunity and treatment and streses the importance of adequate information to give meaning to these rights.  Highlights some experiences with the collection of disability statistics in several countries in the subregion. Identifies internationaly accepted definitions and classifications related to disability and offers suggestions for the inclusion of disability topics not only in censuses but in household surveys as well.</abstract>
