  <abstract>Explores the effect of the proliferation of regional trade agreements such as NAFTA and the EU on the multilateral trading system.  Concludes that while such agreements have reduced the importance of the multilateral trading system as the sole set of rules governing world trade, they have not produced a negative impact on world trade.</abstract>
