520 _aPresents a brief overview of bibliographic and survey data, with emphasis on adequacy of such data to achieve the main objectives of a project which was initiated to research the determinants and processes of present and likely future emigration from Latin America and the Caribbean. Emphasises the strong colonial influence in the region's overall structure of economic and social relationships. Argues that the 1980s was a period of economic, social and political crises for Latin America and several Caribbean countries. The conditions led to increased population mobility, including intraregional labour migration. Political conflicts and violence also provoked involuntary migration. Shows that macro data on economic and demographic trends are sufficient to provide a basis for applying the model of emigration dynamics.
